On this day, we celebrate the singular, revolutionary genius of Elvin Ray Jones (September 9, 1927 – May 18, 2004) – a man who not only defied the known laws of human creativity but also brought unequaled intensity, power, and inexhaustible depth of emotional meaning to the drums.
Elvin Jones is the epitome of what jazz was once known to be – an expression of one’s highest potential charged with an uncompromising assertion of personal integrity against all odds. As such, let September 9th from here on be hailed as Elvin Jones Day.
